Dr. Justin Graham to moderate IT Challenges at Hospitals panel at Health Tech Conference

IT projects are challenging everywhere, but healthcare has a number of unique issues, according to Dr. Justin Graham, North Bay Healthcare CMIO.

Healthcare has a lot of complexity — many different processes, many different actors including physicians, nurses, clinicians, and non-clinical staff that all have different things to do.”

In addition to the complexity of healthcare, there is, “inadequate standardization across multiple healthcare facilities which make it difficult to automate processes, several regulatory mandates (both state and federal), and even the business model of healthcare itself — are among the unique elements in the healthcare industry that make it challenging for IT projects and implementations,” Dr. Graham adds.

We have a lot of work ahead of us, even if we’re investing more now in IT. Traditionally, healthcare had not kept up with IT investments. It has invested less in IT than other organizations. But maybe that’s changed in the last two years.”

On April 19th, Dr. Graham will engage with IT leaders in an interactive discussion on the need for technologies to improve patient care in an afternoon panel entitled, “IT Challenges at Hospitals to Improve Care.” Joining Dr. Graham on the panel will be Dr. Mike Aratow, CMIO of San Mateo Medical Center, Dr. Jenson Wong, CMIO of San Francisco General Hospital, Dr. Rajiv Pramanik, CMIO of Contra Costa County Health Services, and Dr. Kate Bennett, CMIO of John Muir Health.

“There is a lot of work to be done. I’m glad to learn from other organizations — how we can do things better — and I look forward to the opportunity to network with my colleagues and experts in the field.”
